2020 Post Season Review

This is certainly a different triathlon season to review, so the questions reflect that. Please take some time to think about your answers and get these back to me by the end of the month.

*Please make a copy of the document and then fill in your answers. Don't write on the original template!

Happy last month of 2020!

Breathing

 Hey Team,

Some of you may have noticed some "conscious breathing" workouts on your Training Peaks schedules. First of all, please feel free to do this for longer than 5 minutes and/or for more days of the week. Focusing on your breath has 2 main purposes that we can all benefit from.

First- it helps you switch to your parasympathetic nervous system (out of the stressful fight or flight mode that we spend way too much time in). There are too many benefits to list here, but this can help regulate hormones, decrease anxiety, and improve sleep to name a few.

Second- focusing on using your diaphragm instead of just breathing from your upper chest not only improves oxygen efficiency, but your diaphragm is also a core stabilizer. Training that muscle improves all athletic movement.

If you're interested in learning more, I recently read a book called "Breath" by James Nestor that has some good info and talks about the benefits of breathing from your nose instead of your mouth.

Let me know if you have questions or need help figuring out if you're doing it right.

3/4 of the way through 2020...

 Hey Team,

We are 3/4 of the way through 2020 and it's kind of a weird time. Has anyone noticed that 2020 has been both really f&ckng long and somehow flew by at the same time?

We're about 6 months into COVID life and the 6th month wall is a well-known, tough circumstance to deal with in any crisis. It feels like we're running out of steam- getting low on motivation to keep pushing through. I know I'm going to feel a little empty heading into the off-season without having done an Ironman.

It's ok to feel like you're in a slump. And you can hang out there for a little while if you need a reboot, but at some point we're going to get up and push forward.

I'd like you guys to start to think about a few things:

1. In normal years, we take a 2 week break after your last event of the season. That still applies. We need a mental and physical break even without a race to cap off your season. So think about when you'd like to fit that in.

2. What have you learned about yourself this year? In what ways have you evolved as an athlete, but more importantly- as a human?

3. We have 3 months left. What are your intentions for the rest of 2020? This year is not about rolling over and waiting it out. Let's make sure that we end the year on a high note.

I'm just going to leave this quote here because I keep coming back to it this year to remember to keep trudging through the darkness:

“What if 2020 isn’t cancelled?⁣
What if 2020 is the year we’ve been waiting for?⁣
A year so uncomfortable, so painful, so scary, so raw — that it finally forces us to grow.⁣
A year that screams so loud, finally awakening us from our ignorant slumber.⁣
A year we finally accept the need for change.⁣
Declare change. Work for change. Become the change. A year we finally band together, instead of⁣
pushing each other further apart.⁣

2020 isn’t cancelled, but rather⁣
the most important year of them all.”⁣

Racing is on the horizon...

Hey Team,

If you haven't heard, Ironman announced that the World Championship will be rescheduled for 2/6/2021. They seem to be moving forward with other races until the localities tell them otherwise so let's be prepared! It's possible that races take on a slightly different format- maybe self supported? maybe less spectators and volunteers? There's nothing in place for Ironman as of yet.

Also, Coach Dave informed us that one of his athletes has a race on June 7th that is ON. It's a sprint distance in Florida called the Treasure Coast Tri, and they seem to be taking some really well thought out measures:  https://d368g9lw5ileu7.cloudfront.net/races/race70324-customSectionAttachment5ebc018fb88cd7.40807884.pdf

If you were starting to wrap your head around not having a 2020 season, it looks like all may not be lost. If you're having mixed feelings about all this, you're not alone. Let me know if you want to chat.

Checking In

Hey Team,

Couple things:

1. I'm sure some of you noticed the weekly zoom workouts that some of the D3 coaches are doing. Let me know if there are any that you'd like to incorporate into your weekly schedule: Julie's swim band workouts, Jim's core, or Brad's trainer rides.

2. Coach Julie got an idea for an event based on something that David Goggins put together. This is not typically the kind of thing I would sign up for but for some reason I felt like this was the right timing for a terrible idea. Here are the details from her post:

"Ironman has set up virtual racing, very cool, but not my jam, no reason, just is not. I NEEDED something... If you are a David Goggins fan, I mean, who isn't? You are familiar with the 4/4/48 Running Challenge. You run 4 miles, every 4 hours, for 48 hours. 48 miles total. Total badassery. I am not badassery. I am on the other side of a significant injury and feeling good, but 48 miles is not a smart move. So "we" modified the challenge to the following: 5/4/24: 5 miles, every 4 hours, for 24 hours! 30 miles in less than 24 hours.

Date: Sat 4/25 - we start at 4am (PST)
4am: 5 miles
8am: 5 miles
12:00pm: 5 miles
4:00pm: 5 miles
8:00pm: 5 miles
12:00am: 5 miles
BOOM 30 miles in less than 24 hours!

There will be a private FB group and we will build up the enthusiasm! We may do a quick zoom check-in pre-run to do a virtual high 5 and, of course, a post "we kicked ass" video chat. Are you interested?"

3. And on that note about Ironman VR, let me know if that's something you'd like to incorporate!

4. Last but not least, I know that for me personally, my feelings about what I want to do/work on/not work on change about once per hour. I hope you guys all know at this point that I'm here to support you with whatever you need so reach out, let me know what motivates you, even if that is constantly changing.

Coronavirus Schedule Changes

Hey Team,

Looks like Ironman and other race directors are about to start canceling races. I'll be on my way home from Hawaii in the next few hours and I will make all the necessary changes to Training Peaks over the next few days. Feel free to let me know what specific changes you each need.

Nobody should be worried! This is why you have a coach, I have you covered with re-arranging schedules and helping you plan the best way to navigate this craziness. If I've learned anything from my triathlon career so far, it's that you can only control what you can control. We have no say in our races being canceled or postponed, but we can grow and become even tougher and stronger for the next ones.

Onward!
